In 1939, Mrs. Florida Lasier of Chicago snagged her silk stockings on a wild blackberry bramble while exploring the idyllic Smoky Mountain foothills, and the name Blackberry Farm was born. Forty years later, the Beall family invested their hearts and souls in the same romantic site that has become their family home and lifelong passion. Today, one of America’s most celebrated intimate luxury hotels beckons discerning guests who aspire to escape modern-day frenzy and slip into a Blackberry® state of mind. Situated on a pastoral 4,200-acre estate in the Great Smoky Mountains, Blackberry® will show you the many reasons why it is one of the top rated properties in the world.
On The Farm
For centuries the land upon which Blackberry Farm is situated has provided for its inhabitants. The Cherokee and early Appalachians learned how to cultivate these foothill soils and how to forage what was already abundant in the field, forest and stream. Today, we cherish this understanding and continue to preserve these traditional land use practices. Since its inception, the Farmstead has been a favorite gathering place for guests, chefs, and artisans alike. With a vast number of vegetables from their gardens and foraged goods from the surroundings, chefs and artisans have the “raw materials” to provide an array of culinary creations. Their gardeners grow vegetables that offer endless colors, textures and tastes. Their forager, livestock team and local agricultural community provide milk for their cheese maker, meat for their butcher, as well as wild mushrooms, blackberries and ramps for their preservationist. Items harvested around the gardens like sour cherries, sumac and persimmons are offered to the brewery and transformed into award winning spirits. Sustainably harvested ingredients are the essence of celebrated Foothills CuisineWhether you select the intimate charm of a Historic or Estate Room, the legendary elegance of a spacious Singing Brook, Farmstead Cottage, or Holly Glade Suite, the luxurious comforts of a Hill Cottage, the sweeping views of a Carriage House Suite, or the privacy of a Home, Blackberry Farm’s accommodations offer a haven of carefree comfort. From heavenly beds adorned with sumptuous linens to plush robes and luxurious amenities, your accommodations reflect a meticulous attention to detail.
While you are here, we encourage you to take part in the farm activities that we have to learn about the land and the food it provides us. You are encouraged to join Master Gardener John Coykendall in one of his talks about the old days of farming or the art of saving seeds. Take a Farmstead tasting tour and get a good overview of the farm and the opportunity to try some of their farmstead products. They also offer activities with their garden manager and farmstead educator to learn about their gardening techniques and philosophy. Make sure to sign up for a cooking demonstration with one of the artisans to learn their techniques of transforming local bounty into culinary delight.
As was the ways of their ancestors, they use what the local environment has to offer. They grow, harvest and eat according to the seasons. They embrace the culture that makes their area unique and seek to preserve the culinary folk customs of this region. They provide for the artisans and kitchens what the land will allow in a manner that is respectful to the environment and its inhabitants. To put it in artistic terms, the farm is where the colors are ground, the canvas is stretched and all preparations are made for the artist’s masterpiece.
